What is Wave Soldering?
Wave soldering, a high-volume soldering method, facilitates the rapid production of numerous circuit boards. This technique involves moving each circuit board across a bath of molten solder. The solder is agitated by a pump, creating a flowing “wave” that covers the board and solders the components. Subsequently, the PCB undergoes cooling through either water spray or air blowing to securely set the components.
Maintaining precise temperatures is crucial in the wave soldering process. Inadequate temperature control can subject the board to mechanical stress, potentially resulting in cracks and loss of conductivity. If preheating is insufficient, it may lead to cavities, jeopardizing both the strength and conductivity of the board. Incorrect solder temperatures can contribute to the failure to achieve the required solder thickness, making the board more vulnerable to stress.

What is Reflow Soldering?
Reflow soldering, while slightly distinct from wave soldering, stands as the prevalent method for connecting surface mount components to a circuit board. In contrast, wave soldering finds more frequent application in the soldering of through-hole components. Although reflow soldering can be applied for this purpose, it is rarely chosen due to the superior cost-effectiveness of wave soldering.
Reflow soldering involves creating a solder paste from powdered solder and flux, which is then applied to attach components to contact pads. The entire assembly is heated in a reflow oven or under an infrared lamp to melt the solder and establish the joint. If needed, individual joints can be soldered using a hot air pencil.
